It’s HERE…SolidWorks 2014 Beta

Monday, June 24th, 2013

2014 BetaSolidWorks 2014 Beta has just been released.  This is a great time to experiment with the next version of software before everyone else.  You are able to test out the ~200+ enhancements in anticipation for the full version release.

Historically, there has been 3 “Beta” versions and a “Pre-Release” before Service Pack 0.  During each “Beta” version, there are competitions.  They range from finding different bugs to the best high quality renderings.  The winners receive Amazon gift cards ranging from $50 to $400.  The Beta contest are for SolidWorks, Enterprise, Simulation, Composer, and PhotoView 360 Renderings.

To get started with 2014 “Beta”, go to: http://www.solidworks.com/beta/

Add information from external databases to EPDM data cards

Monday, June 24th, 2013

It is always fun to see how people use applications in a different way than originally designed.

PigeonHole was originally written to help people populate complicated data cards with drop lists from a grid type decision tree or from a SQL query.

However, if PigeonHole is populating the drop lists with a SQL query AND there is only one result, PigeonHole doesn’t bother presenting the user with any choices, it simply populates the SolidWorks Enterprise PDM data card with the found value.

A common example is updating your data cards from your purchasing database. This example shows you could add an “Update” button to your data card, this button connects to the data base, searches the purchasing system for the cost of the item, and places the value into the data card.

Another example I recently came across was populating account names/numbers an Outlook Business Contact Manager database. On their folder cards they sometimes knew the account number, sometimes knew the account name. We created two buttons, one for each field to update, each button would connect to their CRM, find the proper information and update the card.

Test Drive SolidWorks Simulation: A Hands-On Guided Tour

Friday, June 21st, 2013

Have you seen our Simulation webinars, and are intrigued about how easy the Simulation products are to use? Or have you always been curious about SolidWorks Simulation and just want to test drive it?

Come and experience the product first-hand as one of our Simulation experts lead you step-by-step through setting up different types of analysis.

You will:

• Get a feel of how Simulation can augment product development, and where it can have a significant impact.

• See how the outputs of Simulation will help you decide if a design change you executed was right or wrong.

• Understand how you can track your design quality as you make changes and re-test your design virtually.

As you experience this FREE learning session, you will be able to relate its usage to your design situations.

This event will only be offered once so don’t miss your opportunity. Space is limited!

Event Details:
July 19, 2013
Indianapolis, Indiana- Sales, Service & Training Center

Get Design Changes To The Manufacturing Team Quickly With SolidWorks Composer

Monday, June 17th, 2013

Quick – how long does it take you to get your design changes communicated to the manufacturing team?

Your answer depends on many things, including stakeholders and workflow, but if the bottleneck is your documentation process, read on to discover a real-world example of how you can repurpose your hard-earned CAD data to also quickly provide manufacturing instructions.

In the video below, Yaris Kabin shows us some output from SolidWorks Composer. (Note they are using a touch-screen device on the shop floor.) The operator is able to quickly gather information about the assembly process with interactive parts lists and the ability to rotate the images in 3D space to get an alternate look at the design. Imagine getting interactive instructions in a 3D format that shows you exactly the steps to follow, vs. traditional paper (2D) documentation that needs to be updated any time a change takes place.

And that takes us to one of the value points of Composer – using digital media to present the assembly instruction set means we can update the digital media quickly, efficiently and accurately. No more searching for the latest (paper) instruction card or pdf – it’s right at your workstation. Any design changes made in the CAD software can be updated easily using Composer and new parts lists and 3D display windows can be produced in minutes. Upload this output to your manufacturing workstations and now everyone has the latest assembly instructions!

Contact us if you’d like to see a demonstration with your files.

Delayed State Notification for Yearly Review Documents

Friday, June 14th, 2013

When SolidWorks Enterprise PDM 2013′s new “Delayed State Notification” function first came out, I imagined it being used to watch for bottle necks in the file’s life-cycle. In sort, a way to keep documents from sitting on someone’s “desk” for too long and being forgotten.

I recently was working with a company whose ISO procedures required them to review certain documents on a yearly basis.

Cake.

DelayedState

Now management is alerted automatically by EPDM when a file needs reviewed.

Another backup story

Thursday, June 6th, 2013

Like horror stories?

I’m working with a customer who had a hard drive failure. They thought they had backups, they didn’t.

It is going to be a week before the disk recovery company can even look at the disk. Who knows what they will be able to recover…

Have you confirmed your backups are working today? You should – every day.
