Section 179 Deduction

3DVision Technologies wants to alert you to important 4th quarter tax planning implications – to take advantage of by the end of this month.

What is Section 179?Essentially, Section 179 of the IRS tax code allows businesses to deduct the full purchase of qualifying equipment and/or software purchased of financed during the 2011 tax year. That means if you buy (or lease) a piece of qualifying equipment, you can deduct the full purchase price from your gross income.

What Software Qualifies?
For basic eligibility, software must meet all the following general specifications:
- The software must be financed or purchased outright.
- The software must be used in your business or income-producing activity.
- The software must have a determinable useful life.
- The software must be expected to last more than one year.

Section 179 does come with limits – there are caps to the total amount written off. For more specific details visit www.section179.org

The bottom line is, if you are thinking of purchasing software, now is a great time to take advantage of the tax benefits.

Successful Flight of Unmanned Aircraft System

3DVision customer SelectTech GeoSpatial is doing some AMAZING things that I just had to share with you.

Just a few weeks ago SelectTech GeoSpatial’s Advanced Manufacturing Facility Technical Team in Springfield, Ohio launched a successful test flight of an unmanned aircraft system (UAS).

The UAS was designed and built with SolidWorks and a Dimension 1200 3D printer. This is the first non-government built aircraft of its kind.

The aircraft has a wingspan exceeding 4 feet and weighs 5.3 pounds. Best part, it was made entirely from ABSplastic. Powered by an electric motor and lithium polymer batteries, it flew in winds in excess of 25 knots. The pilot, Jad Lowrey said, “it took off very smoothly and handled well even in high wind”.

The aircraft was designed and engineered by Frand Beafore, Executive Director of SGAMF, and Beth Galang, Chief Designer. Galang indicated “this design and build system revolutionizes the product development process – not to mention speed to delivery”.

The initial flight trials were made at the Springfield-Beckley airport under The Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) flight rules.

The combination of the amazing design team at SelectTech and the supported solutions of SolidWorks and Dimension 3D printing is a great example of how anything is possible.

SolidWorks 2012 Rollouts

Today’s the first day of fall. It is the best time of the year. Football and hockey is starting (though I’m not sure hockey season ever ends). Baseball and soccer playoffs are soon starting and the new release of SolidWorks is published.

SolidWorks 2012 has a little something for everyone in this release. Watch for the 3DVision team to be publishing articles here in the blog, or better yet we hope to get to show you first hand at our rollouts.

Southern Kentucky Launches New SolidWorks User Group

Launching anything new these days is a feat just in itself but Steve Fye from Span-Tech is taking on the challenge with energy and excitement.

Their first meeting is scheduled for Thursday, October 20, and the Southern Kentucky SolidWorks User Group is planning BIG things.

With a goal to organize a local community of SolidWorks users who want to make the most out of their beloved software, Steve hopes to use this group to help spread knowledge, best practices and more.

Interested parties are asked to submit a simple online registration form which can be found here.

The first meeting is scheduled to begin at 5pm and will include food (always a plus), an open discussion between officers and new members, a presentation of SolidWorks 2012 “What’s New” by our own Chris Snider of 3DVision Technologies and most importantly, a raffle for a Nvidia Quadro 4000 graphics card.

As a supporter of all things SolidWorks, those of us at 3DVision Technologies encourages all users to join a SWUG near them.

SolidWorks 2013 Will Not Install on Windows XP

It’s official – if you plan to upgrade to the latest and greatest version of SolidWorks next year, you will NOT be able to do so on Windows XP.

SolidWorks 2012 software (including CAD, Simulation, Sustainability, and Enterprise PDM) will be the last release that supports Windows XP. This action is being taken as a follow up to Microsoft’s retirement of the Windows® XP operating system in April of 2009. SolidWorks 2013 will not install on Windows XP. For additional information please refer to the System Requirements page on the corporate website.
